Kheir Care provides Consultant-led ADHD assessment and treatment for children and adolescents.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, activity levels, impulse control and functioning across different areas of a young person’s life. A comprehensive assessment considers not only possible ADHD symptoms, but also the young person’s development, mental health, functioning and circumstances across relevant settings.
Every ADHD assessment at Kheir Care includes a detailed face-to-face clinical assessment with Dr Alamin Kheir, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, supported by standardised Conners questionnaires and QbCheck objective assessment.
Relevant information is gathered in advance, including Conners questionnaires completed by parents and teachers and, where appropriate, the young person.
A QbCheck objective assessment is also included as part of every Kheir Care ADHD assessment.
The clinical appointment provides time for a detailed assessment of the young person’s current difficulties, their development and the impact on everyday functioning.
The assessment includes:
An important part of a specialist ADHD assessment is considering whether the young person’s difficulties are best explained by ADHD, another condition, or a combination of difficulties.
Assessment therefore considers relevant differential diagnoses and co-existing conditions, including, where appropriate, anxiety, mood difficulties, sleep problems, learning or developmental difficulties and other neurodevelopmental presentations.
Where concerns are identified that require further specialist assessment outside the scope of the ADHD assessment, these will be discussed and appropriate recommendations made.
Conners questionnaires provide structured information about symptoms and functioning across relevant settings. QbCheck provides additional objective information relevant to attention, activity and impulse control.
These tools support rather than replace the clinical assessment. No questionnaire or computer-based assessment can, on its own, establish a diagnosis of ADHD.
The final clinical formulation is based on the complete assessment and Consultant clinical judgement.
Following completion of the assessment, a separate online feedback consultation with Dr Kheir is arranged.
The assessment findings are discussed with the family, including the clinical formulation, whether diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met, any relevant co-existing or alternative difficulties identified, and recommendations for next steps.
A comprehensive written assessment report, including the assessment findings, clinical formulation and individualised recommendations, is provided following completion of the assessment.
Treatment is separate from the ADHD assessment
ADHD treatment is not included within the ADHD assessment process. Where ADHD is diagnosed and ongoing treatment through Kheir Care is appropriate, treatment is arranged separately following completion of the assessment.
Treatment is tailored to the individual needs of each child or young person and may include:
Where medication is clinically appropriate, initiation, titration, monitoring and medication reviews are undertaken face-to-face. Further investigations may be recommended where clinically indicated before medication is commenced.
Treatment consultations and ongoing follow-up are charged separately from the ADHD assessment fee.
Children and adolescents with an existing ADHD diagnosis may be referred to Kheir Care for review.
A previous diagnosis and supporting documentation will be carefully considered. However, where Dr Kheir is being asked to take responsibility for treatment or prescribing, he must be satisfied that the diagnosis is clinically supported and that the proposed treatment is appropriate.
Further clinical assessment or additional information may therefore be required before treatment or prescribing can commence.
The ADHD service is primarily intended for children and adolescents aged 6–17 years who can be appropriately assessed and managed within a specialist outpatient setting.
All referrals are clinically reviewed before an appointment is offered.
Kheir Care is not an emergency or crisis service and does not provide urgent or out-of-hours psychiatric care.
Kheir Care accepts referrals from GPs and appropriately qualified medical professionals. Direct referrals from parents or young people are not accepted.
