For Referring Doctors

Referring to Kheir Care

Kheir Care accepts referrals from GPs and appropriately qualified medical professionals for children and adolescents who may benefit from specialist outpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatric assessment or treatment.

All referrals are clinically reviewed before acceptance. Submission or receipt of a referral does not constitute acceptance into the service or transfer of the young person’s clinical care to Kheir Care.

Direct referrals from parents or young people are not accepted.

What Happens After a Referral?

Clinical review

Every referral is reviewed by Dr Kheir to determine whether the presenting difficulties and circumstances can be appropriately and safely assessed or treated within Kheir Care.

Referral decision

Where a referral is considered appropriate, the family will be contacted with the next steps, including appointment and payment arrangements.

Further clinical information may be requested from the referrer where required before a decision is made.

Where the referral is not accepted, the referring doctor will be informed.

Specialist assessment

Accepted patients are assessed by Dr Alamin Kheir, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, according to the clinical reason for referral.

Clinical communication

Following assessment and during ongoing treatment, appropriate clinical correspondence and updates will be provided to the referring doctor, subject to the usual requirements regarding consent and confidentiality.

ADHD referrals

For ADHD referrals, please include any previous ADHD or neurodevelopmental assessments, relevant reports, school information and details of previous or current treatment where available.

A previous ADHD diagnosis will be considered as part of the clinical information provided. However, referral to Kheir Care does not automatically constitute acceptance of a previous diagnosis for treatment or prescribing purposes.

Where Dr Kheir is being asked to take responsibility for ADHD treatment or medication prescribing, he must be satisfied that the diagnosis is adequately supported and that the proposed treatment is clinically appropriate. Further assessment or additional information may therefore be required before treatment or prescribing can commence.

Scope of the Service

Kheir Care is a selective, planned specialist outpatient service. Referrals are considered individually, including the nature and complexity of the presentation, clinical needs, risk, and whether appropriate and safe ongoing care can be provided within the service.

Submitting a referral does not guarantee acceptance or an appointment.
Until a referral has been clinically reviewed and formally accepted, responsibility for the young person’s existing clinical care does not transfer to Kheir Care simply by sending or receiving a referral.

Kheir Care does not provide emergency assessments, crisis intervention, urgent psychiatric care or out-of-hours cover.

Young people requiring emergency or immediate mental-health assessment should be directed to the appropriate emergency or urgent service.
